چکیده

In the baseline Neutrino Factory muon front end, strong, closely spaced solenoid magnets are used to contain the high emittance muon beam. In addition, significant acceleration is required for bunching, phase rotation and cooling, requiring RF cavities operating near to their maximum achievable gradient. There are experimental indications that RF cavities may not be able to achieve these large gradients in the presence of such intense magnetic fields. In this paper, I discuss the design of a muon cooling channel that is designed with RF cavities removed from the intense magnetic fields, and examine the change in performance that results from this compromise.

A 201 Mhz Rf Cavity Design with Non-stressed Pre-curved Be Windows for Muon Cooling Channels*

We present a 201-MHz RF cavity design for muon cooling channels with non-stressed and pre-curved Be foils to terminate the beam apertures. The Be foils are necessary to improve the cavity shunt impedance with large beam apertures needed for accommodating large transverse size muon beams. Be is a low-Z material with good electrical and thermal properties. It presents an almost transparent window...

30 T on Target Neutrino Factory / Muon Collider Front - End

A novel aspect of this design comes from using the windows on the rf cavity as the cooling absorbers. This is possible because the near constant β function does not significantly increase the emittance heating at the window location. The window consists of a 1 cm thickness of LiH with a 75μm layer of Be on the rf cavity field side and, 25μm layer of Be on the opposite side. (The Be will, in tur...

A High Power RF Coupler Design for Muon Cooling RF Cavities

We present a high power RF coupler design for an interleaved 2 805 MHz standing wave accelerating structure proposed for an muon cooling experiment at FNAL. The coupler, in its simplest form, is a rectangular waveguide directly connected to an accelerating cell through an open slot on the cavity side-wall or end-plates. Two of such couplers are needed to feed the interleaved cavities. Current h...

The Muon Front End for the Neutrino Factory

In the Neutrino Factory, muons are produced by firing high energy protons onto a target to produce pions. The pions decay to muons and pass through a capture channel known as the muon front end, before acceleration to 12.6 GeV. The muon front end comprises a variable frequency RF system for longitudinal capture and an ionisation cooling channel. In this paper we detail recent improvements in th...

RF R&D for Muon Ionization Cooling Channels

Large emittance muon beam must be reduced or cooled both longitudinally and transversely before it can be accelerated in an accelerator complex for a neutrino factory or a muon collider. In practice, ionization cooling is considered to be one of the most promising transverse cooling schemes for muon beams. When traversing an ionization cooling channel, which consists of absorbers and low freque...
